Couturier was a pupil of François-Edouard Picot at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1844. He specialised in pictures of agricultural life and exhibited several such scenes in the Salon between 1852 and 1865. He absorbed new developments in French painting and wrote studies both on Corot and Millet as well as a novel, in 1844. Many of Couturier's paintings now hang in his birthplace of Chalon-sur-Saône. This work is a charming picturesque farmyard scene. Couturier makes no attempt to explore the hardships of farming and rural labour, instead choosing to concentrate on the more charming aspects of life on the farm. Plump ducks and chickens surround the proud cock pheasant that stands proudly showing off his bright plumage. All of the birds are busy preening, eating and sleeping.
