A man in dark clothes and a woman in a red dress with white collar, accompanied by a small dog, walk down a woodland path which crosses the canvas diagonally towards the lower left-hand corner. The woods are hilly and the leaves of the trees barely let the sun shine through. The overall effect is a dark scene in the close woodland. The light is streaming down through the openings in a thick wood, the deep shadows of which give a brilliant effect to the strong gleams of sunshine thus partially admitted.

In the foreground are mendicants sitting with their backs to the viewer, looking at the couple holding their hats in their hands; in the middle distance the lady and gentleman walking are followed by a coach drawn by two white horses. Lievens did not paint a lot of landscapes and this painting is one of a group of unusual, moody landscapes inspired by Brouwer.
