The muted colours and softer texturing in this landscape and details such as the gently rising smoke contrast with the bright colours and heavy texture of Munnings's earlier landscapes and country scenes. This painting and the words below, written after a late ride, testify to his enduring sensitivity to the countryside around him.

'Autumn glory upon distant woods: upon, oak, elm and beech and hedges, and in the very roads and lanes where yellow leaves lie thick. And as we move slowly along sloping meadows … the expiring autumn day resigning itself to a brooding spell; the shadow lengthening, and the frost already in the air.'
