This ‘Winter Scene’ is described in a label on the back as a ‘polygraphic copy’, a way of reproducing multiple versions of oil paintings. The original of this painting, and its pair, of a 'Summer Scene', were painted by the versatile artist de Loutherbourg, now best known for his landscapes. He exhibited them at the Royal Academy in 1776 with the long titles. The label on the back of this one records that the paintings were bought by the ‘Polygraphic Society of London’, in 1786 for £150 for the pair, with the intention of reproducing them.
