A travelling salesman and his wares attract a crowd of villagers, while others huddle in a group nearby. This drawing is unlike most of van Goyen’s painterly output from the late 1620s and throughout the 1630s, as he generally produced simple landscapes in earthy tones. In this work however, the composition focuses on the large group of figures to the left, while the artist’s treatment of the landscape seems secondary. Another drawing by van Goyen of the same subject and date is in the Albertina, Vienna.
