A few scattered houses line Bishop Street without-the-walls, as it runs down towards the river. The hill of Derry was originally an island in the River Foyle but gradually, from about 3,000 BC. The westernmost channel dried out leaving behind a marshy valley which in time was to become known as 'The Bogside'.
