A view looking along the deck of the barque ‘Endymion’. This is an imaginary scene since Everett never actually went to sea in her. It draws instead on his extensive collection of oil sketches and photographs to create a bright sunlight scene. The billowing sails dominate the top of the painting and a lone figure can be seen leaning against the rail to the right. The bright sunlight has caused strong shadows of the rigging to fall against the deck in the foreground. There is a spare mast stored on top of the deck house on the left. This painting is larger than Everett’s usual sea images. Everett saw the ‘Endymion’ when it was moored in London in the early 1920s. He included it together with the ‘Castle Holme’ in a painting of Surrey Dock at about the same time (BHC4128).
