The best known version of this painting, in the Duke of Bedford's collection at Woburn, exhibited at Edinburgh in 1950, is thought to be of exceptional studio quality. The style of the Foundling Hospital's painting suggests a follower, probably working in Venice in the 1770s. It resembles in handling the hand of the painting 'Venice: The Upper Reaches of the Grand Canal', in the National Gallery. For Michael Levey's discussion of the attribution of the National Gallery painting, see his 'Eighteenth-Century Italian Schools', pp.36–37 (National Gallery, 1956).
