Mrs Mary Delany was a noted 18th-century artist, letter-writer and member of the Bluestocking Society. Her circle of artistic and intellectual friends included the composer George Frideric Handel and botanist Joseph Banks, as well as Lord Chief Justice William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield and his wife, Lady ‘Betty’ Elizabeth. Mrs Delany was a regular visitor to Lord and Lady Mansfield’s home at Kenwood. Visitor were discussed in her visits in her correspondence and Lord Mansfield is known to have sent her a specimen to recreate as one of her celebrated ‘paper mosaick’ flowers. This drawing was made on a visit of 25th June 1757; the date appears with Mrs Delany’s initials on the stone plinth in the left foreground. The drawing is the only known record of the so-called ‘ancient bridge’ at Kenwood.
