When Bosschaert was about thirty, he took up painting still life, a genre in which he became an important influence on other painters, including his brother-in-law and pupil, Balthasar van der Ast. He used a variety of blooms, painting them carefully and separately in a central arrangement. The general design of this still life is similar to a flower piece, dated 1609, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. The two paintings are probably contemporary.
