Charles Soubre was a Belgian artist who painted dramatic scenes from history. This is his interpretation of a key moment from British history.

After Mary was defeated by the Scottish nobles she fled to England to seek help from Elizabeth I. Instead she was held prisoner and moved from one guarded location to another, including Coventry. Her presence in England inspired plots against Elizabeth and finally in 1586 Elizabeth reluctantly signed the warrant for her execution.
