On the sail of the junk there is an inscription bearing the five Chinese characters 'Fo Shan Lian He Dian Zao' ('manufactured by the United Shop in Foshan'). The inscription probably refers to the manufacturer of the sails, rather than the name of the artistic workshop from which the picture came. Apart from a few very well-known workshops targeting Western customers in Canton, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, the majority of the craftsmen did not leave their signatures on these export paintings. If they ever signed, they would sign in English ('Sunqua' is the pseudonym of one of the best known Chinese export painting artists working in nineteenth-century Canton). Painted on the stern of the junk are three Chinese characters 'Li Wan Jin' ('May our profit be ten thousand pieces of gold').
