This scene, also known as ‘The High Road’ is described in a label as a ‘polygraphic copy’, a way of reproducing multiple versions of oil paintings. The original of this painting, and its pair, of a 'Winter Scene', were painted by the versatile artist de Loutherbourg, now best known for his landscapes. The label on the back of the Winter Scene records that they were bought by the ‘Polygraphic Society of London’, in 1786 for £150 for the pair, with the intention of reproducing them.
