Munnings said 'Fools Rush in where angels fear to tread, painting so a large picture from watercolour was asking for trouble. I worked away at it all through the winter. The tone of the grass gave me the same trouble as it does today. I was wretched, but my worst hindrance was the roan colt coming out of the picture. That ambitious effort should have taught me my limitations, I found it "skied" in the last room of the Academy.'
