Loutherbourg was born in Strasbourg, the son of a painter of miniatures. He trained in France, but worked in England from 1771 onwards. He had a successful career exhibiting frequently at the Royal Academy. In 1789, he gave up painting temporarily in order to concentrate on his other main interests – alchemy and the supernatural. A friend published a pamphlet claiming that Loutherbourg had powers as a faith healer.

In his thirties, Loutherbourg designed stage sets in London. This painting, with its rugged, dramatic landscape, owes something to theatre scenery. It is primarily a product of the artist’s imagination rather than an accurate depiction of an actual place or event.
