This stormy seascape projects a view from the shore, looking out to sea. A small craft returns into harbour during a brisk gale. There is a strong wind visible in the sails, flags and the big white tops of the waves. This technique of breaking the water tones well with the lowering grey sky, showing the quality of the technique of Backhuysen. The foreground of this picture shows the shore upon which a fisherman stands with his back to the spectator, holding a spear in one hand and in the other a rope. To his right, a boy is seated, watching the ships at sea, and a little dog runs along the shore, keeping track of the lugger that is reaching the harbour. In the lower right corner, the quay, its destination, is visible with three men working to prepare the safe return of the ship.
