Courtois's nickname 'Il Borgognone' refers to his birthplace in the French region of Burgundy. During three years in the army as a young man he started to sketch military scenes. After he settled in Rome he achieved great fame and popularity until the sudden death of his wife. Courtois was accused of poisoning her, possibly because they had not lived happily. Although he was not charged he gave up his former life, taking refuge with the Jesuits, but continued to paint until his death.
