Signed lower right 'J Wilson'. This scene is probably intended as a view in the English Channel, though it does not seem to be specific and may be largely imaginary: BHC1193 is another of exactly the same size and similar composition, suggesting they are a couple of attractively decorative little 'potboilers' for easy commercial sale. Wilson (1818–1875) was the son of the Scottish-born John 'Jock' Wilson and like him exhibited a large number of pictures, especially at the Society of British Artists, of which 'Jock' had been president and John James became a member in 1845. Most which he showed after 1849 were marines. He appears to have lived and worked with his father in London and in 1853 moved with him to Folkestone, where both died.
