Typical of Hobbema’s mature woodland views is the screen of back-lit trees on the right contrasted with the open sunny vista on the left. The picture demonstrates Hobbema’s inventiveness in the re-use and transformation of landscape formulae and motifs. The left half of the composition, with an unidentified ruin, recurs in several paintings and a drawing. One of these has been attributed to Ruisdael and may indicate an early source for Hobbema’s motif. The 4th Marquess of Hertford bought the painting for the considerable sum of 98,000 francs (about £3,920) at the sale of Anatole Demidoff, Prince of San Donato (1813-70).
