Ten Kate was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He favoured historical genre scenes, specialising in military subjects. Most of these feature soldiers in historical dress from the time of the Eighty Years War (1568–1648), the war through which the Netherlands freed itself from Spanish control. This particular painting, although displaying less common subject matter, is executed in Kate's customary style which incorporates both loosely worked areas such as clothing or architecture and finely detailed transcriptions of still-life subjects such as furniture.
