Roman sculpture of a man with a bald head wearing a toga. The head is not original to the body of the sculpture and the right shoulder and remains of the upper arm have also been added at a later date – they are only an approximate fit to the body. The marrying of the different parts of the sculpture probably occurred in Italy before it was acquired for Chiswick House. This sculpture, together with 88003179 and 88003180, were positioned in the Exedra in Chiswick's gardens – they are shown in this location in a pen and ink sketch by William Kent from c.1736. The head faces right, the detail of the hair and face and the nose is missing. The eyes are large and cheek jowls pronounced. The figure stands, engaging his right leg. He wears a tunic and heavily draped toga in a style that prevails from the first century AD.
