This is one of a pair of reliefs that Gill made in 1910. Its companion is a crucifixion in the Tate. The association with the crucifixion (the pair symbolise renunciation and acceptance) accounts for the inscription and the title of the work. The inscription is from lines in Swinburne's 'Hymn to Proserpine'.
