Coming from an artistic family and a childhood in the country, Upton has always had an interest in painting wildlife. He worked as a teacher for 28 years before retiring to paint and write, full-time. He had his first one-man exhibition in 1974 and has continued to exhibit since. He has a special interest in horses, particularly the Arab horse.
