Creswick painted a number of pictures of subjects along the River Tees at Barnard Castle. In this version he has eliminated the houses and carpet factories along the riverside, removed the White Swan public house and reduced the County Bridge to a packhorse bridge. The castle alone remains against a beautiful early morning sky. The picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1860 as ‘A Relic of Old Times’.
