This pastoral landscape depicts a river on the left-hand side and a slope in foreground with a tree stump. There are cattle and flowers, trees in the middle ground and some hills in the distance. The verse of the title is taken from Herbert George's 1633 poem 'Vertue': 'Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright. The bridal of the earth and sky; The dew shall weep they fall tonight; For thou must die.
