This painting was awarded the ‘Prize for the Second Best Figure’ at the Nainital Art Exhibition in 1908. Nainital is a hill station in the Indian state of Uttarakand, and falls into the Garhwal division of the state. Garhwal has a number of different ethnic groups, the largest being the Kols or Koltas. There are also several other nomadic or semi-nomadic tribal groups, as well as Rajputs and Brahmins. The Jaunsaries, in the northern part of the Dehradun district, are of Aryan stock and wear traditional woollen caps.

Gertrude Ellen Burrard accompanied her husband Sidney Burrard, an Indian Army Officer, around the Indian subcontinent during his time as Superintendent on the Trigonometrical Survey of India. As an amateur artist, she recorded the people and places that she encountered and exhibited her paintings for many years in India.
