A modern plaster copy of a marble sculpture produced by Peter Scheemakers in the 1730s. The original was commissioned by Lord Burlington for his villa at Chiswick. Known simply as the Muse, the figure represents the inspirational Greek goddesses of Literature, Art and Science.

The female figure stands, her left leg bent at the knee, accentuating her heavily draped, Greek Hellenistic style of dress. Her left hand is stretched out and in her right hand, she holds a small rod-shaped object. If the left hand originally held a globe, as has been suggested, the Muse would resemble a statue in the Vatican Museums identified as Urania, the ninth muse of astronomy, philosophy and poetry.

The original Muse, and statues of Apollo, Venus and Mercury, were carved smaller than life-size to enable them to be placed in four corner niches designed by William Kent.
