Brown wooden board, not of the best quality, no chamfered edges which is unusual for Munnings studies as this would have stopped the painting from smudging while he stored them in his wooden boxes. It is unsigned and has nothing written on the back of the board; it is also again unprepared with no washes underneath the oils. Foxgloves were a common study during Munnings’s time in Cornwall, and it looks as if this could be a study for one of his more famous paintings. The background is mostly very impressionistic trees and bushes which are not painted in detail, there are various areas throughout the painting which conveys Munnings’s approach to this study, where some of these areas include more detail than others. The greater focal point Is the foxgloves to the right-hand side, it is clear he has experimented with colour and highlights with purples, pinks and white here, perhaps to see what colours would look like in the finished outcome in contrast to the greens and browns of the landscape.
