Munnings was an admirer of Gainsborough and, in this work, we can see his influence on Munnings. Gainsborough's oeuvre contains numerous paintings of ladies sitting in parkland. Notable amongst these is 'Mary Robinson (Perdita)', 1781.

Munnings wrote, 'I have tried to imagine him (Gainsborough) at work on it: modelling the perfect face-making those deft and subtle brushstrokes on the flounced edging of the skirt ... the inexplicable technique of an inspired genius.'
