Margaret Carpenter, née Geddes, is mentioned in the Society’s Transactions 1812, 1813–1814. Miss Geddes first studied art from Lord Radnor’s collection at Longford Castle and competed successfully from 1812–1814 for prizes at the Society of Arts where the ‘Polite Arts’ committee awarded her oil paintings a Silver medal in 1812 and gold medals in 1813 and 1814. She moved to London in 1814 and established herself as a portrait painter, that year she exhibited for the first time at the Royal Academy, a portrait of Lord Folkestone, and at the British Institution 'The Fortune Teller’ and ‘Peasant Boy’. In 1817 she married William H. Carpenter, who later became Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum.
