A member of the well-known Newlyn family, whose history dated back to the Domesday Book, John Kelynack was a familiar figure in the town as a successful businessman and property owner. His longevity, lively interests and long memory meant that he was regarded as an authority on Newlyn, recounting recollections of Cornwall during the Napoleonic Wars, including the arrival of the news about Trafalgar and the resulting festivities.
