The painting depicts the interior of a mansion, with a group of gentlemen and ladies playing at forfeits. In the centre of the painting is a woman 'paying the forfeit'; bent over with her head in the lap of the seated woman to her right, who holds a handkerchief to the victim's face to mop up any tears. Behind her on the left is a gentleman about to administer the punishment, holding a slipper in his raised hand.
