This river scene depicts a fishing boat at low tide with its sails down. The anchor can be seen to the right resting in the mud. A figure on board wearing a yellow jacket has his back to the viewer as he handles a sail. The boat flies the Dutch flag from the main and red and blue cloth, probably clothing, can be seen hanging from the rigging. Other river craft are depicted sailing in the background to the right and left. On the far right fortifications can be seen in the distance, with the Dutch flag flying. In the foreground on the right a man wearing a red hat stands with his back to the viewer, holding a spade in his right hand, while a basket lies at his feet by wooden palings. Goderis was a close follower of Jan Porcellis and like him his palette was of closely toned greys and brown, with the colour provided by the clothes of the figures and detailing such as flags.
