A ferry boat in the foreground dominates this painting. The boat is shown sailing in starboard broadside towards a rocky landscape to the far right of the picture, with a fortified building on the cliff behind. The sea is calm and the artist has placed his initials on the rocks in the foreground to the left. The boat, with a covered area in the stern, is intentionally crowded with a variety of racial and social types but only two women are present among the 23 figures portrayed. Equally deliberately, the artist has placed a dog seated in the prow. Two men are mounted in the centre, facing away from the viewer, and one man leans with his arms over the side towards the viewer. The landscape is imaginary since it is not typical of the Dutch coast and, indeed, seventeenth-century Dutch marine artists often used such landscapes in their work.
