A ferry boat in the foreground dominates this painting. The boat is shown sailing in starboard broadside towards a rocky landscape to the far right of the picture, with a fortified building on the cliff behind. The sea is calm and the artist has placed his initials on the rocks in the foreground to the left. The boat, with a covered area in the stern, is intentionally crowded with a variety of racial and social types but only two women are present among the 23 figures portrayed.
