A Dutch gaff-rigged yacht in starboard-quarter view is shown becalmed on the right of the picture, with the starboard leeboard visible. It flies Dutch flags and pennants, including a jack, has an ornately carved stern and tows a ship's boat. It is firing a salute from the port bow and figures are clearly shown on the deck. Behind it on the right are two boiers also flying the Dutch flag. In the foreground on the right a small boat is rowing towards the centre of the picture with a man standing in the stern laying a fishing net. On the left is a merchant ship in starboard-bow view, drying sails. A carved golden lion rampant is visible as a figurehead. Figures can be seen working on the side of the ship and a small boat, with men rowing, is taking a line from it towards the shore.
