A Dutch ship is portrayed entering an Italian port, apparently Naples. The ship has the crest of the States General, as well as the crest of a young prince riding on horseback, on the stern. As a result it is thought likely that the ship is called the 'Jong Prins Te Paard', which means the 'Young Prince on Horseback'. A small local craft in the foreground observes its progress. The port is to the right with hills beyond. The masts indicate the presence of a harbour and in the foreground there is a tower and the buildings of the port, with a fortress and church above. There are rocks in the right foreground with a tower on the top, and a man fishing. The artist's signature is incised in the sea on the lower right side of the picture. There is a seal on the back of the painting.
