As a young man, Bath artist Thomas Barker was sent to Rome to see continental paintings and improve his technique. A local businessman, Charles Spackman had funded Barker’s education and travels. This work dates from 1793, at the end of Barker’s time in Italy. Spackman was keen to see a return on his investment, and all of the oils that Barker painted in Italy were sent to England as soon as possible for Spackman to sell. This painting, conventional in format, dreamy, atmospheric and with enormous visual appeal, would have been a highly commercial painting.
