An oil sketch showing a small Danish naval vessel off a distant coast. While previously called a 'Danish frigate' it has now (2013) been pointed out that the ship is too small, lacks the white stripe along the side that these had, and is more likely to be a corvette, perhaps the 'Thor' (1851–1877) or a similar vessel. It flies the Danish flag and is shown under steam in a busy waterway, with smoke billowing out to the port side, surrounded by small coastal craft with distinctive red sails. On the far left is a smaller sailing craft also flying the Danish flag. The painting has previously been roughly dated to about 1880, but bears the remains of the artist's signature in red, lower left, and what appears to be the date of 1875. It is one of a pair with a view of a ‘A Danish Brig Driven Ashore’ (BHC1224), both formally acquired in 1952 though possibly on loan from 1948.
