James Booth was born in Middleton. His father was an Alderman of Middleton and Mayor in 1895/1896. He studied at Manchester School of Art and exhibited regularly at Manchester Academy of Fine Arts annual spring exhibition where he met fellow Middletonian artist Fred Jackson. Jackson was already going to the Staithes area of North Yorkshire to paint and Booth followed, initially lodging in the nearby village of Hinderwell and sharing a studio with Laura and Harold Knight in Staithes. Booth moved to Scalby near Scarborough in 1901 and built a studio in the garden of his house. He regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy.
