Probably painted in the 1650s, the subject is typical of the picturesque encampment scenes which inspired Watteau and his followers in the eighteenth century. The picture was probably in France by 1735, when it was engraved by P.-F. Beaumont under the title 'Reste d’armée décampée'. It was later purchased by the 3rd Marquess of Hertford who, in addition to acquiring at least two other works by the artist which he later sold, also bought six pictures by Wouwermans for the Prince of Wales (the future George IV; Royal Collection).
