This is probably the committee of the Ancient Order of Shepherds, a friendly society which made sickness and other benefit payments. Their premises were in Old Market and Bristol buildings are seen here through the window. The table dominates the composition and gives drama as well as adding to the psychological tension between the figures. Henry Lamb's best work was made in the 1910s and 1920s when he was associated with the Bloomsbury Group and then with Stanley and Gilbert Spencer.
