This painting was once part of a sequence of small panels, known as a 'predella', which were positioned under a large altarpiece. Seven of the original eight panels are now known but the large altarpiece under which they were placed has not yet been firmly identified. As the Bishop Saint is facing towards the left, it is likely that he would have been placed on the right looking inwards towards the central panel of 'The Nativity' (Philadelphia Museum of Art). Lisa Venturini (1992) has suggested that this group of predella panels may have been for a now destroyed altarpiece by Domenico (1449–1494) and David Ghirlandaio (1452–1525). This altarpiece was a commission from the friars of the Convent of San Francesco al Palco, close to Prato in Italy, for their high altar.
