In this painting, Bedford has captured the warm light flooding through the open barn door. This single source of light throws deep shadows into the barn’s interior. Within the shadows we can make out the farmer at work on the far left. The rich brown, earthy colours enhance the rustic subject matter, which is presented here as quaint and humble. Rural life was often idealised as an antidote to busy, oppressive city life.
