An urn surmounts a classical stone sarcophagus, supported by four diagonal volutes. The heavy volutes rest on the buttresses at each corner of the rectangular pedestal. The two long sides of the pedestal contain panels bearing inscriptions; the panel to the west is copper and to the east slate. The ends of the pedestal, and some the faces of the buttresses, have raised ovoid plaques and these also have inscriptions. The similarity of the design to many of the drawings in the so-called 'Paty Copybook' suggests that the memorial was designed by Thomas Paty or possibly by his son, William.
