Mitchell was originally an officer in the 4th Battalion Highland Light Infantry who volunteered in 1916 to train as a pilot with the Royal Flying Corps. His squadron carried out reconnaissance and artillery observation above the trenches of the Western Front. Mitchell was killed in action aged only 19.
