The memorial commemorates over 10,000 men who were killed or listed as `missing presumed dead' whilst serving with the 24th Infantry Division on the Western Front in the First World War. The three stone carved soldiers with helmets, rifles and full kit, are modelled on: Trooper Morris Clifford Thomas, of the Machine Gun Corps (right); Sergeant J. Woods, of the 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex (centre) and Robert Graves (the poet and writer), of the 3rd Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers (left). They are mounted on a cylindrical plinth and a serpent impedes their forward motion. Twenty unit badges are featured around the plinth as well as an inscription. These badges were carved by Lucy Sampson, a student at the Royal College of Art.
