The artist has created the effect of a layered three-dimensional collage in oils using a variety of shapes and symbols. For example, the stylised waves and gulls’ footprints suggest the sea, while the window behind the head is a recurring motif in Nicholson’s work. The artist’s future wife is here cast in the role of queen, making her the object of veneration.
