
Painter, born in London, who attended Edinburgh College of Art, 1978–82, Glasgow School of Art, 1993–5, with time at California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles, in 1994. Group shows included Three Person Show, City Racing, 1992; New Art in Scotland, CCA, Glasgow, 1994; Sugarhiccup, Tramway, Glasgow (where Wright latterly worked), 1996; and About Vision, Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, and tour, 1996–7; and Correspondences, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, 1997–8. In 1994, Wright had solo shows at the California Institute and at Tramway. He won a Paul Hamlyn Foundation Prize in 1998. In 2001–2, at Tate Liverpool, Wright painted directly onto the wall producing intricate designs influenced by medieval illuminated manuscripts, tattoo art and music.
