Painter, photographer and teacher, born in Manchester. He studied at Lanchester Polytechnic, Coventry, 1972–3, Cardiff College of Art, 1973–6, and Slade School of Fine Art, 1976–8. He went on to teach at City University. Winstanley was much concerned with urban architecture in his pictures, representationally as in Walkway No.3, in John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, 1989–90; and in a geometrical abstract way as in his series of City Flats pictures held by Arts Council. Winstanley’s painting College II, of 1992, was acquired for the European Parliament Collection and was in Twelve Stars, Arts Council Gallery in Belfast and tour, 1992–3. In 1991–2 he was artist-in-residence at Churchill College, Cambridge, followed by his solo shows Paintings, 1991–2, Kettle’s Yard, Cambridge and tour, and Driven Landscapes, Camden Arts Centre, 1993.
